Making every meal a pleasure: high-quality cutlery from RÖSLE
The spick and span stainless steel cutlery looks even better on a festively laid table. But high-quality cutlery also makes you and your guests feel comfortable and welcome in everyday life.
Basic cutlery equipment includes table knives and forks, soup spoons, coffee or teaspoons and cake or dessert forks. But what is the difference between the various types of cutlery and how can you tell if it is of excellent quality? Which features are important when choosing steak cutlery and which are important for children's cutlery?
We have summarized the answers to these and other questions below.
High-quality stainless steel, fine mirror polish: quality features of cutlery
Cutlery is used daily in most households, which is why the high quality must extend to the material, shape and handling. In this case, high quality does not mean that cutlery should be made of silver. On the contrary, today silver cutlery is seen more as an investment than as everyday cutlery.
Other materials used to make cutlery are aluminum, chrome steel and stainless steel. Aluminum is a good choice if you are looking for cutlery for a camping vacation due to its light weight, but it will not withstand daily use for long. Chrome steel, also known as 18/0 stainless steel, is somewhat more durable and heavier than aluminum and is usually cheaper to buy. However, you won't be doing yourself any favors in the long run, because the “0” in the designation indicates that chrome steel contains no nickel and is therefore not rust-resistant.
Stainless steel in the 18/10 version, i.e. with 18 % chrome and a maximum of 10 % nickel, is therefore really recommended for cutlery that is used regularly. This is because only stainless steel of this quality is proven to be corrosion-resistant, easy to clean, has antibacterial properties and does not react with food. Perfect for cutlery!
In addition to the material, the workmanship and design determine the quality of cutlery. High-quality workmanship means that the outer prongs of the forks are slightly wider than the inner prongs and that there is even spacing between the prongs.
The handle of a high-quality table knife has a shape that tapers towards the blade or appears waisted so that it can be easily guided when cutting. The knife blade should be made of special blade steel. Finally, when it comes to spoons, individual taste usually determines whether a rather wide and round or a narrower shape is preferred.
In any case, it is important that all cutlery items are free of sharp edges, i.e. smooth and finely polished - whether they have a high gloss or matt finish is irrelevant.
Menu cutlery, steak cutlery or children's cutlery: consider different selection criteria
Table cutlery still shows that people once counted by the dozen, as cutlery is regularly put together for 12 people (60 pieces). Smaller households like to choose half the number, i.e. a set for 6 people (30 pieces). This means you have enough cutlery even if you have guests for dinner.
Do small children (aged three and over) live in the household or do the grandchildren like to visit to be spoiled a little? Then remember to add one or more children's cutlery sets to the list when choosing cutlery.
Of course, quality is also particularly important when it comes to children's cutlery. Because just as children are not small adults, children's cutlery should not simply be smaller than the cutlery for adults.
A child's cutlery set consists of four instead of five components: a fork, a soup spoon, a dessert spoon and a knife. The knife is designed in such a way that it is also known as a “food pusher”, as the blade is not sharp. So it can't really be used for cutting, but the youngest children can already practise eagerly doing the same as the adults and picking up solid food with a knife and fork.
Ergonomic handles, a child-friendly shape and robust stainless steel without sharp corners and edges help them to do so. A pretty, child-friendly design encourages ambition and fun when eating with children's cutlery.
Table knives for adults should have a fine edge, but do not need to be quite as sharp as kitchen knives. The situation is different for steak cutlery, which usually consists of 12 pieces. Here, the professional serrated edge or strong serration is just as important as the tapered blade.
The classic steak cutlery for barbecues usually has wooden handles or plastic handles with a rivet look. If the steaks are served at the dining table, however, we recommend steak cutlery made entirely of stainless steel, as this is more effective there and can be easily combined with other cutlery components.
